@jfuchiga First i’m sorry for the late response :S , Then for your question the DI (Distraction Index) is derived from the PENNHip evaluation test, which can be scored 0 to 1 , 0 Being a tight joint and 1 being a loose joint (A loose joint being more vulnerable for the development of HD)
If this test is scored 0.3 Or above the chance of developing HD (either in a mild or severe state) is present.
If i am correct (And please correct me if im wrong) This test can be taken @ 4 months or older.
@NVDRZ1M
Since you seem to be savvy on this topic, I was wondering if you know what is a good Distraction Index? I was recently looking at a pennhip report for the parent canine and its marked as: Left DI = 0.31, Right DI 0.50 .
Are these good figures compared to the average? or is this a liability to adopt a dog from this litter.
if my dog ever gets hip dysplasia to the point where it changes hes mood or he has trouble walking around the block, and has trouble getting up, then its time for him to be put down, and all you so called dog lovers out there who let their dogs suffer and live with this problem should be put down them selfs. i find its mostly the old people that allow their dog to carry on suffering with this problem, i hate old people, their so fucking boring and annoying.
my dog is currently getting hip displacement they say by her birthday she is going to have to be in a wheel chair. my dog is a mix breed. when we first saw her displacement she was walking swinging her hips all sassy like it was actually kind of funny to watch her. but funny went to sad when we relized what it really was. the sad thing is her in august 2010 her birthday present is going to be a wheel chair. happy birthday maggie!
I don’t know if anything can be done, but I have had a dog with this disorder and it was very upsetting. This is a painful, disabling problem. This is not a joke or a lie, please don’t take it lightly, it could happen to me or you, because humans are equally affected!
Does anyone know if anything can be done about it? Like can cortizone be injected into the joint to lessen the dogs pain and increase its mobility, even if temporarily?
NO! Why would you breed any dog with any hip problems. You are only going to make their pups suffer for the rest of their lives. Get another female and then breed but dont breed any dog with moderate hip problems.
id suggest not, the reason why you have a dog ith dysplacia in the first place is probably because of uninformed breeding in the first place.
Your puppies might not end up with moderate but severe ( the odds are there). Youd be bringing more pain into the world, pain in the new dogs and THEIR possible offspring and pain to the owners.
The fact that you asked this shows me that you are a thoughtful and compassionate person. please dont! continue trying to find healthy good tempered dogs 2 breed

Canine Hip Dysplasia
Depends on the level of degeneration in the joint, often times supportive care (NSAIDS/pain meds) along with rest and diet.
There are surgical corrections available too. There are total hip replacements
available as there are in humans.

Alright, I’m doing this for a class project, so what are some cures to hip dysplasia, or are there none?
Hip dysplasia in dogs are very similar to arthritis in humans and it is very painful.
