Dr Russell Barkley, Ph.D giving a lecture on ADHD at The Centre for ADHD/ADD Advocacy Canada (CADDAC). To view the full-length lectures, visit www.caddac.ca
i had very high adhd & dyslexia (also creativity) but just because of my intense ambition, i learnt meditation, breathing exercise & other simple techniques to help increase my executive function & motivation.
I can’t explain it, but this motivational issue is completely true. I’ve been living with ADHD all my life, and I’ve never really thought of it as much. I didn’t think of it as a seriously hindering disorder. I’ve never bitched about it and felt sorry for myself. This is all true though. I wouldn’t be in college if it weren’t for external motivation. The disappointment from my family is what keeps me from dropping out. I have no desire to be in school regardless of the long term consequences.
I can’t hold a job because I get bored, and I make a snap decision to leave with NO THOUGHT to the consequences of that action. It is severely debilitating and the ignorance NEEDS TO STOP, GADS PEOPLE! OPEN YOUR EYES!
Every single one of you people that do not suffer (and we DO SUFFER) from ADHD and criticise us that do for being lazy, stupid, or whatever else you want to call it need to grow the fuck up and learn something. This ‘condition’ has been the bane on my existance, it has almost cost me my marriage on several occasions. I snap at my kids because I have such a hard time regualting my emotions.
@charitha42 Would you deny bipass surgery if you had a heart attack? Would you not change your diet and exercise more? Or is the heart attack just a construct of society, which is continually trying to put you in a box? ADHD is no different. Mental disorders are often stigmatized as “not real”, and it needs to stop. Would you say to an alcoholic that his/her addiction isn’t real? Or that your grandmother’s Alzheimer’s is actually a gift? How insulting.
@charitha42 I’m sorry, I don’t know what reality you are living in, but in my reality I have to pay the bills and make money. That’s just a fact of life (unless you are one of the lucky few who has a trust fund or married rich). I’m not going to do that by sitting around thinking dreamy thoughts. I love doing that, and that sometimes can provide wonderful insights, but if I do nothing with those insights than what is the point? Medication is a tool for me to take my dreams and make them reality.
@charitha42 The funny thing is that I am actually a very creative person and have been recognized for my artwork and creative writing. Can’t someone be scientific and creative? Or is everything black and white? The difference is that I inform myself with as much information as I can before forming unique ideas or opinions. To critique ADHD without understanding how the brain works is just ridiculous. It’s like trying to write before learning the alphabet.
@charitha42 Hahahaha, Um yes I would argue evolution. I totally accept that some things are beyond scientific explanation, but that does not trump the fact that science holds a lot of truth. I understand completely what you are trying to say when you mean “the heart”, you mean human emotional connection and intuition, which are obviously very important things and arguably the meaning of life. BUT to live out our lives without recognizing our biological background is ignorance pure and simple.
@bananaba1121 Ah!! are you seriously still believing that you are nothing but a chemical reaction ?? All the love, care, happiness all a matter of chemicals ?? If I ask you how did human origin on Earth? would you still be giving me a lecture on evolution ?? what scientists know is what they observe.. but there s heck a lot of things that are beyond observation.. and thus explanation.. and thus science.. do you know what gravity is ? do you know the origin of force? use your mind..
@theoriginalpandanon which mean you are very well capable and smart when you make the choice to formulate your own reality… but people want everyone to fix into a frame called normal.. where they have stupid education and all.. but people are supposed to be free and energetic in life.. learning through the Chanells of their own interests and curiosity.. that s how great inventors invented and great creations were made.. almost all ADHD are born creative.. but some dnt know it or made blind.
@FlyKanga You think what you are is a problem/disorder because they say you are.. but the truth is you are not supposed to be like others.. you are supposed to be free and away from the social boundaries people have made around them.. ADHD is a gift to those who step out of this frame and discover their own reality.. but a curse to those who try to live in another’s reality which people call normal.. within the normal frame an ADHD can never discover their own potential.. time to prison break.
@bananaba1121 well I admit that everyone is different.. there are ADHD subtypes. there is a type that is not that creative and intuitive as well…maybe you are one of those.. ( it was obviously otherwise in the case of Einstein and Edison etc ).. well I gave facts as to why this fellas theory is not applicable to the alpha and theta state ADHD ppl.. ( btw get your thyroxine checked sometime).. and you have confined my logic to a matter of dislike.. perhaps u are one of his patients… :p
@charitha42 Also, do not generalize what ADHD minds do or do not find interesting. I have ADHD and found this video extremely engaging. Just because you don’t like it or understand it doesn’t mean it’s intrinsically wrong.
@charitha42 Um… you do realize the heart is just an organ right? The emotions that you are talking about are a result of chemicals in the BRAIN. Don’t disrespect a scientist’s expertise. He knows a heck of a lot more than you do.
@theoriginalpandanon That’s because the things that you enjoy doing give you an immediate reward (pleasure) and therefore you keep doing it. It’s basic positive reinforcement techniques. It’s when things do NOT provide an immediate reward that we have difficulty accomplishing it. His theory makes perfect sense to me. You should watch his video about consequences and reinforcement.
