MaximsNewsNetwork: 12 April 2010 – UNMINUSTAH: Port-au-Prince, Haiti – United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary General Asha-Rose Migiro arrived today for a three days visit in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. On arrival she was welcomed by Haitian foreign minister Marie Michel Ray and the UN Special Representative for Haiti Edmond Mulet. SOUNDBITE (English) Asha-Rose Migiro, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations: I know that in conditions of disaster it is women; it is children; it is people with disabilities; it is the old people; that suffer most. So I am here to see that, I am here to recommit ourselves that we will work with the Haitian people and that the programmes will target the people. She also met with Haitis President Rene Preval to discuss the current situation in the country. SOUNDBITE (French) President Rene Preval, Haiti: The international community is engaged. Now it is up to the Haitians to do the follow up so that it becomes a reality. We had a lot of commitment, but there are also conditions. The Parliament has voted the emergency law which creates the institution that will manage all these funds. Migiro came to Haiti to assess conditions in camps for people displaced by the January earthquake, including sexual violence against women. In the Acra camp in Port-au-Prince she met with female UN Police (UN POL) officers who are working to secure the camp where 20000 people are living. The camp, managed by the American Refugee Camp (ARC) is providing the population
